As wireless network systems designers look to alternative energy sources, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) announced a solar energy harvesting (SEH) development kit that converts ambient light into power for industrial, transportation, agricultural and commercial applications. The credit card-sized eZ430-RF2500-SEH kit combines Cymbet Corporation's EnerChip™ thin-film battery technology with TI's MSP430 microcontrollers (MCU), CC2500 radio frequency (RF) transceivers and the eZ430-RF2500 development tool. Developers can now build self powered solar-based wireless sensor networks, eliminating system batteries, which cost time and money to periodically replace, especially in remote locations. In remote or hard-to access environments, wireless sensors are becoming increasingly integrated and miniaturized. Until now, designers typically powered wireless devices via storage components such as coin cell or AA batteries. However, these storage technologies do not supply the right mix of charging, storage, discharge and physical size characteristics to provide permanent power for wireless devices. Now, the combination of Cymbet's EnerChip batteries with TI's MSP430 MCU and CC2500 RF technology allows energy harvesters to achieve more efficient storage, processing and transmission in both bright and low light environments.

Emerson Process Management has introduced a cryogenic seal for its Rosemount^® 5300 Series of high performance Guided Wave Radar (GWR) level transmitters. The seal enables accurate, reliable level measurement of condensed and liquefied gasses at very low temperatures (to

-196° C) and is ideal for use in process tanks, side chambers, storage tanks and transportation vessels.

The development of the seal, which is a direct result of customer demand from within the chemical, oil and gas and petrochemical sectors, offers benefits to all process industries where liquefaction of gasses occurs. These gasses include natural gas, ethane, propane, butane, LPG, NGL, ethylene, nitrogen, inert gasses (such as Argon, Neon and Xenon) and carbon dioxide. The hermetic gas-tight and robust construction also offers a safe and reliable seal solution for measuring liquefied anhydrous ammonia.

The new transmitter seal provides multiple layers of protection using a temperature and pressure barrier in a flexible assembly to handle forces induced by probe movement and temperature variations. A second brazed hermetic, gas-tight seal provides additional protection. The entire assembly is welded into a stainless steel sleeve for total robustness.

'Investment will strengthen position in the Nordic low voltage business

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has agreed to acquire all interests in the Finnish joint venture, Ensto Busch-Jaeger Oy, from Ensto Oy, subject to the customary regulatory approvals. ABB owns a 21-percent stake in the joint venture, and has agreed to take over the 79-percent stake of the business owned by the privately held Ensto Group for an undisclosed amount. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter 2009.

Ensto Busch-Jaeger was formed 28 years ago by ABB subsidiary Busch-Jaeger Elektro of Germany and the Ensto Group of Finland to produce high-quality wiring accessories and installation material such as light switches and sockets for the Nordic residential and commercial building markets.

The business employs about 120 employees and is based in Porvoo, Finland, with business activities in Sweden and Norway. It will be part of ABB’s Automation Products division. In 2007, Ensto Busch-Jaeger had revenues of about $55 million.
